Coach Pedersen is the proud father of Dominic (16), Dakota (11) and Zavier (8).
Coach Pedersen is in his 5th year as Head Coach of the Mount Vernon Football Program and 27th year overall. Over the past thirteen seasons his teams have compiled a 114-44 record. In 2017 Coach Pedersen lead the Mount Vernon Mustangs to a 9-2 season and a back to back District title. In 2016 Coach Pedersen lead the Mount Vernon Mustangs to a 9-3 season and the state semi-finals. In 2015 Coach Pedersen lead the Mount Vernon Mustangs to an 11-3 season and the state title game. His team finished the season as the state runner-up in class 2A. In 2014, Coach Pedersen's first season he lead the team to a 6-5 finish where they won their first playoff game in over 10 seasons.
Before coming to Mount Vernon, Coach Pedersen was Head Coach for the Wilton Beavers. The Wilton Football Program had its first playoff appearance in Coach Pedersen's first year as their coach in 2004. Under his direction, Wilton was an undefeated District Champion three times and made the playoffs eight of his 10 years as head coach.
Coach Pedersen brings with him two state championship experiences (one as a coach and one as a player) and has been a coach or player in 35 state play-off games.
Coach Pedersen is also a 5th through 8th grade Wellness instructor. Coach Pedersen is an assistant coach for girls basketball. Coach Pedersen enjoys spending time with his kids, and loves the outdoors.

Defensive Coordinator (Varsity)At Mt. Vernon since 2015
Coach Haddy is in his third year as Defensive Coordinator for the Mustangs and 9th overall. During his first two years with the Mustangs, Mount Vernon has made two trips to the State Semifinals including a runner up finish in 2015. The 2016 team won Mount Vernon's first District Championship since 2003. The Mustang defense ranked first in the district in total defense, scoring defense, and rushing defense in 2016.
Prior to coming to Mount Vernon Coach Haddy had stops at Independence and Lisbon. While at Lisbon Haddy was the Defensive Coordinator for the Lions for four years. During that span Lisbon had 4 playoff appearances, won 2 District Titles, and in 2011 won the school's first State Championship. In 2011 the Lion defense lead the state in points allowed at just 6.5 ppg. Haddy was also the head boys basketball coach at Lisbon for 6 years, in 2012 he lead the Lions to their first and only State Tournament appearance.
Coach Haddy is married to Lyndsi who is an elementary teacher at Lisbon.

Coach Dan Ketchum is entering his 3rd year on the Mount Vernon Football Staff. Coach Ketchum grew up in Wisconsin where he attended high school and played football in Platteville. Coach Ketchum moved to Mount Vernon in 2009 and has been heavily involved in youth sports. He has coached baseball, basketball and youth tackle football from 2011-2014.
Coach Ketchum and his wife (Susy) have two children, Mackenzie (15) and Brady (13). Coach Ketchum favorite activity is spending time with his family, and he also enjoys hunting and fishing.
Quarterbacks/Def. Line (Varsity)At Mt. Vernon since 2015
Coach Jason Nosek is in his third year of coaching football at Mount Vernon. A Mount Vernon graduate, Coach Nosek played football for the Mustangs. He also furthered his education at Luther College where he also played football, wrestled and played rugby.
Coach Nosek has coached at the club and youth levels for several years.
Coach Nosek and his wife Julie (MV Grad), have two sons Aidan 14 and Brody 10. Coach Nosek and his family reside in Mount Vernon.
Running Back/Asst. Defense (Varsity)At Mt. Vernon since 2016
Coach Matt Appleton enters his first year as an assistant coach for the Mustangs. Coach Appleton is a graduate of Union High School in La Porte City where he played football as a quarterback, basketball and track.
Coach Appleton is also a gradiuate of Wartburg College where he earned a BA in Biology. Coach Appleton is currently working in sales for manufacturer of home medical equipment.
Coach Appleton has been involved with all youth sports including tackle football for the last ten years.
Coach Appleton and his wife Emily have three children, Ike (15), Leo (12), Elsa (10). Coach Appleton and his family reside in Mount Vernon for the last 15 years. Coach Appleton enjoys spending time with family doing many outdoor and athletic activities.
JV Offensive Coordinator (Varsity)At Mt. Vernon since 2015
Coach Ben Knake was a 2 Time All State Football Player at Lisbon. While at Lisbon Coach Knake was a QB and S on the 2011 State Championship team. He was also an all-state basketball player, an all-conference baseball player and was a letter winner in 4 sports.
In 2015 Coach Knake was named 1st team WR all-conference, Cornell MVP Offense, JR athlete of the year. In 2013 Coach Knake was 1st team all-conference and in 2012 Coach Knake was named Cornell first year male athlete of the year.
JV Defensive Coordinator (Varsity)At Mt. Vernon since 2016
Coach Preston Pedersen is in his second year of coaching football at Mount Vernon and is also the Strength and Conditioning coach for the Mustangs. Coach Pedersen is a graduate of Northwest Missouri State University (Maryville, MO) where he studied Health & Physical Education and played football for the Bearcats.
After receiving his bachelor's degree, Coach Pedersen continued his education at Northwest while accepting a Strength & Conditioning graduate assistantship. Coach Pedersen worked with many different sports but stayed very active with football, traveling with the team and helping with sideline operations.
Coach Pedersen and his wife, Emily, reside in Mount Vernon.

Coach Aaron Truitt is entering his 7th year as a Mount Vernon football coach. Coach Truitt is entering his 18th year of coaching football. Coach Truitt has been a Co-Head coach at Central City, a high school and middle school coach at Durant and a varsity coach at Regina High School.
Coach Truitt is also the middle school athletic director, elementary physical education teacher and an assistant wrestling coach.
Coach Truitt is married to his wife Hilarie and has two children Alivia and Alaina.

Coach Mike Jones is in his 2nd year coaching football at Mount Vernon. Coach Jones officiated football for the past 17 years. A graduate from Mt Vernon in 1992. Coach Jones lives in Mt Vernon with his wife Tricia and 3 daughters Sydney, Abby, and Zoey.

Greg was 7th & 8th grade football coach at North Cedar Middle School for two years. He has spent 4 years at Mount Vernon on the 8th grade football team. He has also been a Head Wrestling coach at North Cedar for 2 years and an assistant Junior High and HIgh School wrestling coach at Mount Vernon for four years. Coach Murphy is married to Brittany and has two daughters Tenley 3 years old and Macey is 1.
